The WAC and transfers

Nick Jezierny has an article today on the number of transfers who populate WAC rosters. A quick perusal indicates a number of these bouncebacks come from the highest level conferences (PAC-10, Big 12, Southeastern) and that many return to the area in which they played high school basketball (home).

Take a look at the rosters of the men's basketball teams in the WAC and you'll find 19 players who started their careers at other Division I colleges.

The WAC has become a haven for transfers, and several programs have added proven players and achieved success with the help of relocated D-I talent...

Transfers can help, but it's not the best way to build a foundation of success. In that article Graham says that WAC teams have to find players not recruit them. While Nevada has one transfer, the Pack builds with recruiting and freshmen. Sure it's a down year this season, but that's due to losing Hanson to a freak incident and McGee to the NBA. Things that just couldn't be planned for. Building with transfers leads to occasional success with frequent poor seasons - unless you're Stew Morrill - and Boise and SJSU will find that out soon enough.
